Campaign Against Child Poverty Launched in Freiburg

In Germany, one child out of six lives in poverty. This is the alarming result of a report recently published by the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs (Bundesfamilienministerium). Like many other German cities, the prosperous south German town of Freiburg im Breisgau is experiencing a steady rise in child poverty. Today, the charity 'Arbeiterwohlfahrt' (AWO) launched a local poster advertising campaign, to call attention to this disquieting development. By making available about 100 advertising spaces in City Light Poster-format and on City Light Boards, Wall AG is supporting the campaign. Wall AG's support is valued at about 15.000 euro. "Poverty leads to the social marginalization of children and presents an obstacle to their development", Daniel Wall, Chief Executive Officer of Wall AG points out. "Children living in poverty are excluded from the leisure activities of their peers and are in danger of becoming low-achievers. To have equal opportunities for a good start in life, they depend on our support." On the posters, nursery-rhymes point to the fact that for more and more children even basic requirements for a happy childhood are no longer attainable. The campaign is accompanied by lectures and debates, discussing the reasons and effects of child poverty as well as possibilities of prevention.
