Art & Culture: This Way, please!

A new way-finding system for tourists has been inaugurated today by Wall AG, specialized supplier of street furniture and outdoor advertising, and Christina Emmrich, district-mayor of Berlin-Lichtenberg at Frankfurter Allee/Möllendorffstraße. Places of interest and cultural institutions around the district are indicated to pedestrians by nine information columns. The locations of the two metres high backlit columns were chosen by the district's administration. Integrated maps and information texts are designed to help citizens and tourists to find their way through Lichtenberg. "Off the popular high-streets, Berlin offers a treasure of attractive historical sites which remains to be discovered", Daniel Wall Chief Executive Officer of Wall AG points out. "Our new way-finding system assists tourists on their way through Lichtenberg and makes it possible to discover hidden places of interest. This is an important step for the district of Lichtenberg towards an accessible and citizen-friendly city."

Owing to their elegant design by Professor Josef Paul Kleihues, the nine columns harmonically adapt themselves to their surroundings. They indicate the century-old town-hall at Möllendorffstraße and the Tierpark Friedrichsfelde, Europe's biggest landscape-zoo. At Nöldnerplatz train-station, attention is called to the historical working-class quarter "Victoriastadt", where popular Berlin graphic artist Heinrich Zille lived and worked for several years. Sports and architecture meet at Konrad-Wolf-Straße. There, columns provide information on the renowned Mies-van-der-Rohe-House as well as on Sportforum Hohenschönhausen, home of the successful ice hockey club "Eisbären Berlin". Wall AG's way-finding system for tourists is already operating in the Berlin districts of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Pankow, Reinickendorf and Spandau. A total of 90 information columns are guiding tourists and citizens through the capital. This was made possible by an outline agreement of cooperation negotiated in 1999 between Wall AG and the city's department of Planning, Housing and Transport. The establishment of the way-finding system involves no costs to the city. Maintenance and cleaning of the columns are provided by Wall AG's specialised service-team.
