Pupils Embark on a Voyage of Discovery around Wall AG

Kids from Berlin-Kreuzberg take a glimpse behind the scenes

20 pupils of Jens-Nydahl-Elementary-School today were taken on a voyage of discovery around Wall AG's production plant at Velten and to subsidiary DIE DRAUSSENWERBER GmbH at Berlin-Spandau. How can a bus-shelter have intelligence? Why can a telescope show the past? Why an advertising pillar is called 'Litfaßsäule'? These were just some of the questions Wall AG's employees had to face when cross-examined by inquisitive pupils. But not only did the year 3 to 6 pupils take a glimpse behind the scenes but got down to the workbench themselves at the training facilities of Wall AG's Velten production plant. At DIE DRAUSSENWERBER in Spandau, a poster pillar was professionally placarded. "Images of professions and career plans – however sketchily – are developed already in elementary school. This underlines the outstanding importance of the first steps of education. At this early stage, the fundaments of qualification for a future career are laid." Daniel Wall, Chief Executive Officer of Wall AG points out. "As a company offering a wide range of apprenticeships, we are aware of the necessity to promote young talents on all levels of education, and consequently we strive to impart basic skills, economic thinking and a picture of diverse professions to pupils of elementary schools." As Partner of the Jens-Nydahl-Elementary-School located in Kreuzberg, Wall AG has during the school year 2005/2006 initiated the project "rechenfix & wortgewandt" ("quick with numbers & glib with words"). 94% of pupils of the Jens-Nydahl-Elementary-School are from an immigrant background and have difficulties taking in lessons due to a deficient knowledge of the German language. This problem is tackled by Wall AG's advancement program. Its aim is to enhance the pupils' skills in reading, writing and arithmetic. Intensive courses with a maximum of ten participants are held twice a week. Today 40 children are taking part in the advancement program that is financed by Wall AG with 18.000 euros each school year. Results are encouraging: Vocabulary and general knowledge of the participating children have significantly improved. Jens-Nydahl-Elementary-School has successfully taken part in the mathematics contest "Kangourus des Mathematiques" and the advancement program has won the acclaim of parents as well as pupils. The program impressively shows that the advancement of children from an immigrant background can be achieved within their familiar surroundings.
