Even a loo can be turned into a design highlight. This was proven by the most recent prize awarded to Wall AG’s most modern WC Centre: the underground toilet facilities at Berlin Alexanderplatz received the coveted iF communication design award 2008 in the category of Corporate Architecture.
The company refurbished and modernised the central underground toilet facilities for about EUR 750,000. The reopening took place in August 2007, attended by Berlin’s Governing Mayor Klaus Wowereit.
The renowned design and architectural practice IONDESIGN, which Wall AG has been cooperating successfully with for 10 years now, was entrusted with the aesthetic design of the facility. The iF awards rank among the most important design prizes of today. They confirm a successful result of design services rendered in an economic context.
"Restroom facilities are public city furniture. That means, in terms of quality and design, they have to be guided by the needs of the users and blend in with the surrounding cityscape", said Daniel Wall, Chairman of the Wall AG Board. "We transformed the formerly inhospitable public toilet at Alexanderplatz into a space of light, which has now earned its respective award."
Clear proportions and contrasts of light and dark define the WC Centre. Anthracite stoneware floors, a white mosaic of tiles, glass surfaces and mirrors provide for an aesthetic appeal and a pleasing atmosphere.
A lift made of white glass transports the disabled and people with prams downstairs comfortably.
